PLANS for an iconic terminal building for Abu Dhabi International Airport have moved forward with the release of a tender by Abu Dhabi Airports Company (Adac).
The general contractor tender has been released for the Midfield Terminal building (MTB) that will cater to the airport’s dynamic passenger growth and support Plan Abu Dhabi 2030.
The design and engineering of the building has undergone a rigorous peer review with six world-leading airports and consultation involving the stakeholders, based on which a complete design and a comprehensive tender package was prepared to ensure the efficient execution of the project.
Following the award of the tender by the end of the year, the dates of the construction completion and the operational commencement will be announced.
The main 700,000-sq-m terminal building, which will have an initial capacity of 27 to 30 million passengers per year, will be one of the world’s largest and most architecturally built structures.
In parallel to the tender for the MTB, Adac has been executing since 2010 a capacity enhancement programme (CEP), which will allow Abu Dhabi International Airport to handle an additional seven million passengers.
Furthermore, Adac is currently in the last stages of the Terminal One refurbishment, further upgrading the world-class airport services.
Currently, the piling works for the MTB have been completed, with a total of 7,425 piles, and the grading works for the East Midfield are under way, which will house the various support facilities for the new Midfield Terminal building.
