01 May 2012

A CONSORTIUM of Turkey’s TAV Construction, Arabtec Holding, and Athens-based Consolidated Contractors Company (CCC) is the preferred bidder for an estimated $3-billion contract for the expansion of Abu Dhabi’s international airport.

“We are very proud that our joint venture with CCC and Arabtec has been announced the preferred bidder for the construction of Abu Dhabi Midfield Terminal Complex, which is the largest construction contract award in the UAE,” Yusuf Akcayoglu, Gulf regional director of TAV Construction, told the Gulf Construction.

The new terminal will be around 700,000 sq m in size, according to ADAC’s website, and is a key part of an ambitious expansion programme at the airport in Abu Dhabi, the UAE capital. The complex will include the terminal building, passenger and cargo facilities as well as duty-free shops and restaurants for a total capacity of up to 40 million people a year.

Akcayoglu ... 'historic win'

It is slated to become operational in 2017. “As a specialised airport builder, we will deploy our best team and employ the most capable suppliers and specialist subcontractors to complete project on time, with highest quality and budget,” Akcayoglu said.

The other consortia contending for the contract were Bechtel Corporation-Enka-Al Jaber Group; Hyundai Engineering & Construction-Kumho Engineering & Construction-China State Construction Engineering Corporation-Al Shafar General Contracting Company; and Samsung-ACC-Six Construct.

“This remarkable victory will reinforce TAV Construction’s position as a leader in the world airport construction market,” said Akcayoglu.
