Council to hear 100 stories

01 August 2012

MORE than 100 presentations will be made by the world’s leading experts on tall building development at the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat’s (CTBUH) ninth World Congress in China next month.

The CTBUH, to be held from September 19 to 21 at the Grand Hyatt Jin Mao in Shanghai, will be the first event in China organised by the Chicago-based CTBUH.

‘Why tall?’ will be the central theme of the congress, where leading builders and designers of Chinese skyscrapers will address issues related to the new urban culture evolving in the country. China is in the midst of a tall building construction boom with more than 259 buildings of more than 150 m being currently built – the most in any country, according to proprietary data compiled by the CTBUH.

The number of 150-m-plus buildings in China increased from 37 in 1990 to 799 in 2010, the CTBUH study found. China completed 23 buildings taller than 200 m in 2011, more than any other country, which included five in Shanghai alone.

“Tall buildings are transforming China’s cities,” said Timothy Johnson, chairman of the CTBUH and a design partner in NBBJ, an architecture firm. “The developers and designers of these buildings are tackling the issues of creating the best environments where the next generation in China will live, work and play.”

The CTBUH, a not-for-profit organisation for developers and professionals involved in the development of tall buildings worldwide, is the leading resource for professionals focused on the design and construction of tall buildings and future cities.
