Volvo dominates hauler market

01 December 2002

Al-Futtaim Auto and Machinery Company says it has cornered the lion's share of the articulated hauler market in the UAE.

''Although only a small country, Al-Futtaim has secured a 91 per cent market share for Volvo articulated haulers in the country,'' says marketing manager Kamal Husain.

He continues: ''Al-Futtaim won orders for 13 Volvo haulers with Abu Dhabi-based Al Fahjan ordering six A35Ds and Sharjah-based Marwan General Contracting Company ordering seven units following delivery of eight A35Ds late last year.''

This success, particularly with the recently launched Volvo A35D is, according to Husain, due to a more professional approach introducing the concept of articulated hauling to make money for the customer.

He says: ''Al Jaber, for example, has already recognised the benefits with two years additional operation out of its Volvo fleet of haulers. The contractor previously replaced its competitive marque fleet of haulers every three years.

''Taking delivery of its first Volvo articulated haulers in 1998, Al Jaber is now getting a fifth year of operation out of its fleet. Al Jaber has been very impressed with the performance of its Volvo units and recently extended its fleet with an order for the further 30 A40D haulers.

''These units were purpose-ordered for a new power and desalination plant being built alongside the existing Qidfa power station close to Fujairah.

''The project includes the construction of a 185-km-long water pipeline linking the 818 million-litre capacity desalination plant with a new 818 million-litre reservoir at Al Ain.''
