Swiss firm eyes airport deals

01 April 2003

A Swiss aviation lighting specialist currently equipping airports across Europe and Asia is bidding for major projects in Kuwait, Qatar and Dubai.

Nivatec, designer and manufacturer of high-mast lighting systems, has joined an international line-up of exhibitors competing for contracts during the third Airport Build & Supply Exhibition and Conference taking place at Airport Expo Dubai from June 2 to 4.

Organised by Streamline Marketing, the exhibition is a showcase for airport suppliers from around the world, and companies like Nivatec, visiting the Middle East for the first time, hope to capitalise on the airport development projects.

Airport developments worth $10 billion are planned or under way in the Middle East.

Nivatec, which is currently supplying airport lighting systems in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Brunei and Korea, will be showing a full-scale model of a unique up-down airport apron lighting system in Dubai.

Slovakia-based IDES expects the exhibition to boost its sales of airport check-in counters, and police, customs and information booths in the Middle East, which currently generates 20 per cent of its annual turnover.

Switzerland-based Schmid Telecom aims to build on a recent Middle East breakthrough to supply voice communication and control systems for Air Traffic Control. Last year, the company supplied a new voice communication system at Ras Al Khaimah Airport, and also won major contracts for similar systems at Guangzhou and Xi'An airports in China.

Office show slated for May

Dubai: More than 100 companies will exhibit their products and expertise at the Office 2003, slated to open on May 19.

The expo will be held at the Airport Expo, Dubai.

Office 2003 has taken up a space of 20,000 sq m, 5,000 sq m more than the 2002 area, says Bernard Walsh, managing director of DMG World Media, the organiser of the show.

The expo is likely to be visited by around 7,000 people, 20 per cent more than 2002, he says.

The Office exhibition has attracted a lot of interest from international participants from Asia and Europe apart from the regional markets. Office, which started last year, will also have two daily seminars hosted by CitySpace this year. The seminars will cover topics such as work practices and emerging technologies. Strategies, initiative and benefits will be also debated in these seminars.

The GCC region imported some $2.8 billion worth of furniture and interiors products in 2001. The UAE and Saudi Arabia represent about 60 per cent of the regional total imports of furniture and interiors products.
