$35 million projects under way

The Public Works Office in the UAE's Western Region is implementing Dh130 million ($35.4 million) worth of maintenance and construction projects. The projects include schools, mosques, medical centres and hospitals.

Six new schools are being built in Zayed City, Ghayathi and Sela, including a model boys school in Zayed City and another model girls school in Ghayathi.

A new Mussalla (prayer hall), being constructed over an area of 22,300 sq m in Baynounah at a cost of Dh900,000, is due to be handed over to the Ministry of Justice, Islamic Affairs and Awqaf by the beginning of August.

The office is also carrying out civil, electrical and mechanical maintenance works for 57 schools and 400 mosques. Medical centres, hospitals, interior roads and highways and heritage buildings in Delma island are also undergoing maintenance.

A new public hospital is being built in Liwa at a cost of Dh76 million. Special accommodation for doctors and nursing staff is also being constructed alongside the hospital. The accommodation is expected to be completed by June.

Mitsubishi develops high-speed lift

Dubai: Mitsubishi Electric Corp is developing a high-speed elevator for skyscrapers. The elevator is designed aerodynamically to reduce wind pressure. The car platform of the elevator features an active vibration control system to reduce lateral vibration at high speeds.

A Mitsubishi executive said the elevator would be offered for the Burj Tower, the proposed tallest skyscraper in the world planned by developer Emaar Properties.

Mitsubishi is testing the elevator and will soon be ready to manufacture it. The company, which has 55 per cent of the market share in the UAE, is represented in the Gulf, CIS states and the subcontinent by Dubai-based ETA Melco.

$121 million roads completed

Dubai: The Dubai Municipality carried out road projects worth Dh446 million ($121 million) in 2002.

Some of the projects were: a road network in Al Satwa area (Dh37.65 million); Al Safa Interchange on Shaikh Zayed Road (Dh67.48 million); roads in the Rosan area (Dh17.9 million); the road network in Hatta (Dh9.4 million); the Al Sofouh roads (Dh27.3 million); pavements work in Al Khubaisa (Dh8.19 million); the road network from Al Safa Road to Umm Suqeim (Dh29 million); the Bu Kadra interchanges (Dh112.4 million); the 106 km Hatta Road (Dh46.29 million); the Ras Al Khour Interchange (Dh42 million); the Al Mazhar roads (Dh23 million); and pavements in Al Tawar area (Dh10.55 million).
