Tenders for the UAE National Power Grid will be floated during the next quarter. The work will include linking the power grids of Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah and Fujairah to one national grid.
The engineering consultant on the Dh500 million ($136 million) project is Electricite de France. The French utility won the Dh12 million contract to supervise the interconnection work after it carried out the feasibility study on the project. The work will take two and a half years to complete, according to Saeed Mohamed Ahmad Al Tayer, general manager of the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa).
The UAE expects to have an installed power capacity of around 19,000 MW by 2010. The country's five utility firms have set up a joint technical committee to oversee the development of the grid. An agreement on sharing revenues will be reached at a later stage.
When completed by 2006, the UAE grid will be a key element in a Gulf-wide grid. The six Gulf Arab states plan to link their electricity grids in the project that will cost an estimated $1.1 billion.
Meanwhile, Dubai has yet to pick a bidder for its proposed Dh1 billion 'L' station at Jebel Ali. At the 'K' station project, which is under construction, Dewa has commissioned the desalination plant and will soon commission two gas turbines.
