$5.3bn investment plan for Jeddah

01 November 2003

Jeddah is to be transformed into a massive development site under a number of projects which are estimated to cost at least SR20 billion ($5.3 billion), according to news reports.

The projects involve the construction of new flyovers, underpasses, roads, redevelopment of entire areas, the restoration of the historic city centre and new museums, the reports said quoting Jeddah mayor Abdullah Al-Mouallimi. The city is also expected to get new airport terminals at King Abdul Aziz International Airport (KAAIA) and a mass transport system.

Many of the projects are earmarked for completion by 2005, when Jeddah celebrates the 1,400th anniversary of the declaration by the third caliph, Uthman ibn Affan, closing the ports of Obhur and Shuaiba and making Jeddah the sole port of entry for pilgrims on Haj and Umrah to the Holy Mosques.

Two tram systems are planned as part of the mass transport system. One is reported to run from KAAIA taking pilgrims to Makkah Road, the other from north Jeddah to the city centre along Malik Street.

Some 70 projects are in progress at a cost of SR1.5 billion. Many of them will have to be ready by 2005 in time for the anniversary. 'We'll add 10 more projects valued at SR400 million to SR500 million. Apart from these, there will be a SR7 billion sewage treatment project as well as water and electricity projects,' he said.
A sum of SR4.5 billion has already been allocated for the expansion of KAAIA.
