Jeddah airport to get $1.5bn faceliftJeddah: Construction work on a project to expand and upgrade King Abdul Aziz International Airport (KAAIA) in Jeddah is slated to start in the second quarter of 2004 and be completed by 2010.
Reports confirm that the international engineering-construction firm Bechtel and Saudi engineering firm Dar Al Riyadh have been awarded a $1.5 billion contract for work on the project by the Presidency of Civil Aviation.
The expansion project includes the construction of new terminals for international and domestic passengers, expansion of existing terminals, construction of 25 air bridges, additional parking facilities, a new access road, and the upgrade of landside and airside infrastructure. The expansion is intended to unify international flight operations of all aircraft, including those of Saudi Arabian Airlines, and facilitate the movement of passengers.
Kingdom Centre inauguratedRiyadh: The SR3 billion ($800 million) Kingdom Centre was inaugurated by HRH Crown Prince Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Deputy Premier and Head of the National Guard recently. Located in the heart of the Saudi capital, the Kingdom Centre includes the Kingdom Tower, Al Mamlakah Mall, Ladies Kingdom, Saks Fifth Avenue, Riyadh Four Seasons Hotel, and the Kingdom Conference Hall.
The Kingdom Centre project represents the first of a series of projects to be developed by Kingdom Holding Company and was designed to be a multi-purpose project. The eastern wing of the project includes Al Mamlakah Mall. The western wing of the project encompasses the Kingdom Conference Hall. The double height hall, which is column free, occupies an area of 4,000 sq m.
The middle area of Kingdom Centre is occupied by the tower, which rises to a height of 304 m above ground level, and is four metres taller than the Eiffel Tower in Paris.
