Schwing swings a record at Jumeirah

01 March 2005

Ten Schwing concrete pumps – eight S 42 SX and two KVM 52 – worked a record 33 hours for a 10,000 cu m raft slab at the Jumeirah Beach Residence (JBR) completing one of the largest single continuous concrete pours in the UAE.

A total of 14 raft foundations were undertaken by Ready Mix Beton during the months of June, July and August last year.
“Seven batching plants – five working full time with two on standby duties in the event of a breakdown – were used to supply for the pour, a very special grade 50 concrete containing 65 per cent slag (GGBS) and 35 per cent cement (OPC) and a water/cement ratio of 0.37,” says a spokesman for the Germany-based Schwing. Four of the plants were located in JBR site production facility close to the Shaikh Zayed Expressway a distance of almost 1 km, with additional standby plants in Al Quoz Industrial Area, a distance of almost 15 km.
“In the hot summer of last year, the RMB batched concrete was mixed with ice and chilled water such that the fresh concrete temperature was 27 deg C or less. More than 1,100 tonnes of ice – provided by four ice plants – was used to control the temperature due to hydration throughout the pour, and to combat the high ambient daytime temperatures of 45 deg C.
“The continuous pour for the raft slab was extremely successful and completed in full to the project specifications for the client Tecom, the project manager Mace International and the main contractor Al Habtoor Engineering,” says the spokesman.

JBR Sector 4
Says Hashim Al Dabal, CEO of Estitmar Reality, the developer of Jumeirah Beach Residence (JBR): “Because of the very nature of the project we wanted to ensure we got the very best people and machines to execute it. In this way we could guarantee top quality.
“The contractors that have been finally selected are all top of their class with tremendous track records of executing many of the world class projects throughout Dubai.”
That contractors of this calibre need to rely on dependable machinery for such high-profile jobs as JBR is a clear sign of the confidence they place in Schwing concrete pumps,” the spokesman says.

JBR project
In total, the JBR project will feature 36 residential towers, some reaching 54 storeys, plus four hotel towers and beach clubs to provide more than 22 million sq ft of gross floor area over a length of 1.7 km, much of it waterfront development.
The quantity of concrete contracted to Ready Mix Beton is 50 per cent of the total. The project has been split into seven sectors, each one being awarded to a separate main contractor and consultant. RMB was allotted a total of 18 towers in sectors 2, 3 and 4, for contractors Al Saleh Constructions, Arab Technical Construction (Arabtec) and Al Habtoor Engineering Enterprises. In order to speed up construction, some contractors combined the rafts of twin towers to be cast in one continuous operation.  This resulted in a total of 14 raft foundations, the thickness of which ranged from 2.8 m to 4. m in certain locations.
Established in 1934 by Friedrich Wilhelm Schwing, in the the Ruhr Valley, the heart of Germany’s most important industrial area, Schwing has over the years quickly found customers in the mining industry, in road construction, in civil engineering and in construction.
In addition to the 900 employees at its headquarters in Herne the Schwing Group employs a further 1,500 persons worldwide in production plants in Germany, Austria, the US, Brazil, Russia, China and India. “We have sales and service centres in France, the Netherlands, Austria, the Czech Republic, Sweden and Korea as well as representations in more than 100 countries worldwide,” says the spokesman.

KVM 52
Since its introduction in the international marketplace, Schwing’s KVM 52 has always been a pacesetter in boom design. “With more than 150 units operating worldwide, the model is one of the most successful super-boom ever,” says the spokesman. “The wide acceptance has been a success story based on knowledge of the market and customer requirements, experience in design and engineering and an absolute commitment to long-term product quality.”
With a 52 m vertical reach with overhead roll-fold – a concept that keeps the base unit compact and therefore manoeuvrable on the road, the unit comes fitted with a proportional boom control and the MPS concrete pump control.

S 42 SX
In the super-boom category, the S 42 SX not only offers a long reach, but also high pumping economy. It can be fitted out with the P 2525 H super-long pump cell that turns in maximum pumping outputs with minimum wear, adds the spokesman.
“Super-X outriggers get the machine right into the centre of the action and has the world’s most popular boom with Pulsar-Prop control and MPS for the concrete pump. With a super-long stroke (2.5 m, optional) for outputs up to 160 cu m/h with only 22 strokes per min, and alternatively 50 cu m/h with only seven strokes/min assures absolute minimum wear costs,” he concludes.
