THE Indian School Bahrain (ISB) is planning to construct a new campus and a higher education centre at a cost of BD2 million ($5.3 million) on a land area of 40,000 sq m.
The land has been leased to the school by the Riffa Sports Club at West Riffa, said the chairman of the ISB executive governing board, Abraham John. An agreement for the land lease has been signed between chairman of Riffa Sports Club Sheikh Abdulla bin Khalid Al Khalifa and John.
The project involves a new 25,000-sq-m campus to accommodate an estimated 5,500 students in 144 classrooms – including the students from the Sitra campus, the lease agreement of which expires in September 2013. The remaining 15,000 sq m is expected to be utilised for setting up the higher education centre. Presently, the school functions from two campuses located at Sitra and Isa Town.
“Our commitment to the community led us to provide a higher education centre under the ISB banner for our children after they graduate from the school,” said John.
The new centre is expected to provide undergraduate programmes – including Bachelors in Arts, Bachelors in Commerce, Bachelors in Business Administration, Bachelors in Business Management and Bachelors of Science in Computer Science.
He said that a memorandum of understanding (MoU) has been signed with the SRM University, India, for providing undergraduate programmes. The proposal for setting up the centre has been submitted to the Ministry of Education for approval, he added.
Established in 1950, the ISB caters to the educational needs of students of Indian origin and 14 other nationalities. The school now has 9,900 students on its roll, including around 600 Bahraini students.
