Cares secures Ukas approval

01 August 2012

CARES has achieved the Ukas (United Kingdom Accreditation Service) accreditation for its key sustainable certification scheme.

Cares received this recognition from the Ukas  in June for its Sustainable Reinforcing Steel certification scheme against the requirements of BS8902:2009 ‘responsible sourcing sector certification schemes for construction products’.

This recognition makes the Cares scheme the only sustainability certification scheme independently accredited by Ukas and the only one accredited to this British Standard, according to a Cares spokesman.

The scheme covers the entire supply chain of reinforcing steel – from manufacture, processing and to delivery to site. As such, it is designed to mirror the more traditional Cares scheme for steel for the reinforcement of concrete and certainly the traceability (chain of custody) requirements imposed by that scheme are of great assistance when dealing with sustainability, according to the spokesman.

Furthermore, it is a requirement of BS8902 that a scheme sector report be issued, at least on a biannual basis and Cares is about to issue its first report.

Cares is an international operator, providing certification in more than 40 countries worldwide. In order to provide product users with the confidence that their products arrive at the construction site as specified, Cares certificates firms at all levels through the supply chain, from the production of hot metal through processing and stocking and distribution.
