BAHRAIN-BASED locally-owned company Taha International Corporation has been awarded the dross management contract with Oman Aluminium Rolling Company’s (OARC) plant currently under construction in Sohar, Oman.
OARC’s plant will begin production in August 2013 and represents a significant milestone in Oman’s downstream aluminium development.
“OARC’s contract award is another important stepping stone for Taha’s cost-effective and environment-friendly processing,” Taha managing director Frank Pollmann said.
Taha’s new facility in Oman will come on the heels of a similar installation for Rio Tinto’s Pacific Aluminium smelter at Tiwai Point in New Zealand, which opened last year.
Dross is a by-product of aluminium smelting and re-melting, which has traditionally been recycled using salts and flux to recover available metal. The remaining dross residue is typically dumped in landfills, a practice that is now under scrutiny worldwide due to the potentially adverse environmental impact.
Taha’s proprietary processing uses no such salts or flux. Instead, the residual dross is refined into non-toxic oxides suitable for numerous downstream applications, including agricultural fertilisers.
