WORK on the Sheraton flyover in Muscat, Oman, will start this month as part of a project to ease traffic flow between two areas in the capital city.
The Darsait-Wadi Kabir flyover project is a part of Muscat Municipality’s project to ease traffic flow from Darsait to Wadi Kabir, the Times of Oman quoted an official of Muscat Municipality as saying.
“Traffic congestion in this vital stretch is going to be reduced following the building of the Wadi Kabir flyover, the Sheraton flyover and Star cinema flyover, in addition to the interchanges,” said the official.
The municipality said that 60 per cent of the work has been completed, mostly on the Wadi Kabir flyover.
The project will be built to high safety standards with good lighting and drainage systems. Also, all the roundabouts would be replaced by intersections with traffic lights to better regulate and ease traffic in this area.
The official added that Muscat Municipality has a strategic plan to solve traffic congestion in Ruwi because of its importance and the volume of the daily traffic movement, starting from Qurum Heights to Wadi Kabir.
New lanes have been opened for those heading towards Ruwi and Wadi Kabir as well as Sultan Qaboos Port, the official said.
The new lanes leading towards Qurum from Darsait would be opened in the near future to ease the traffic, the official added.
The Darsait-Wadi Kabir flyover project will be opened to traffic by 2016.
