$1bn airport revamp work in full swing

01 March 2018

Work on the $1.1-billion Bahrain Airport Modernisation Programme (AMP), the largest infrastructure project in the kingdom, is progressing at a steady pace, reported BNA citing a senior minister.

Among the latest developments on the project, Bahrain Airport Company (BAC) – which manages and operates  the airport – has issued a new public tender for security fencing in a bid to improve its landside and airside boundary. The project will see the upgradation of the existing airport perimeter fence and will include additional CCTV and lighting installed at the new fence, reported the BNA.

The first stage of this two-phase project  was completed in March last year. The second stage, now tendered, will be completed within six months.

Following the revamp of Bahrain International Airport, the facility will feature a new passenger terminal, 24 airport bridges, new arrival and departure lounges and loading bays.

“We have made solid progress with nearly 60 per cent of the infrastructure work already completed,” stated Transportation and Telecommunications Minister Kamal Ahmed. “The airport is presently serving around nine million passengers a year, but with the expansion it is expected the number would increase up to 14 million passengers.”

The new terminal is likely to be operational during Q3 of 2019.
