Dubai Municipality is finalising the construction of four road projects in different areas in the emirate at a total cost of Dh286 million ($78 million), as a part of its development plan.

Khalid Khalifa Al Marri, head of the roads construction section at the Road Department, says that the municipality had just finished a Dh55 million roads project in the Zabeel area as part of a series of initiatives carried out ahead of the Dubai 2003 financial meetings.

The project, launched in May 2002, was completed by the end of August 2003.
It included the building of dual and single carriageway roads, parking and footpaths around the towers along Sheikh Zayed Road; building footpaths or parking on internal existing and proposed roads within Zabeel residential area.

The project will also include three new signal-controlled junctions within the project area; a signal-controlled junction on Road 309; streetlighting, landscaping and irrigation, and a well-developed network for Etisalat and Dewa (Dubai Electricity and Water) services.

In addition, the municipality is finalising the construction of interchange Number Four, the Police Academy Interchange, on Sheikh Zayed Road, costing a total of Dh109 million. The construction of this interchange is part of plans to replace all eight bridges on Sheikh Zayed Road. New bridges will be in place by 2007.

The project involves the construction of four bridges, seven free-right ramps and three loops, and improvement of the Umm Suqeim Road, part of Jumeirah Road and Al Sufouh Road with three signalised intersections.

It also involves extensive landscaping operations and relocation of all service lines including sewerage, storm water drainage, water, electricity and telephone cables and automatic irrigation system covering the entire project area.
