A massive dome-shaped structure is coming up at the Jebel Ali Free Zone (JAFZ), which the developers consider could make its way into the Guinness Book of World Records.
The project, which is now on the verge of completion and should be ready for commissioning towards the end of July 2004, is said to feature the biggest space-frame-free span dome in the world.
It consists of a cylindrical storage facility housed within a structural steel space frame dome with a height and diameter of 80 m and 177 m respectively. The steel dome is mounted on a post-tensioned concrete wall rising up to 25 m in height.
The dome was developed at the Jebel Ali Free Zone (Jafz) facility of Al Khaleej Sugar as part of its expansion plan and is expected to provide an additional storage facility to store over one million tonnes of raw sugar.
The design, fabrication and execution of the structural steel part of the dome-shaped structure was awarded to Rasana Engineering Industries as a turnkey project. Because of the complexity of the project, the firm passed on the design part to its Singaporian sister concern Rasana-Anlida Spaceframe International, a specialist in the design of large and complex space frame structures, says Hany Hanna, general manager of Rasana Engineering.
The top of the dome is designed to receive a conveyor gallery with an electric belt to transport the raw sugar up to the center of the dome before its final drop-off point into the storage tank.
