Coflexlite unit opens in Abu Dhabi

01 May 2004

The Technip-Cosmoplast joint venture, signed in March of 2003, finally came to fruition last month, following the official inauguration of the Coflexlite Abu Dhabi facilities by Dr Mohmuned Khalfan Bin Kharbash, the UAE Minister of State for Finance and Industrial Affairs.

The multi-million-dirham Technip-Cosmoplast investment is described as a firm testament to the continued view of the UAE being a highly attractive location for expansion.
“Both Technip and Cosmoplast were in no doubt as to where to locate the facilities. The product will be marketed for the GCC and beyond,” says a spokesman for the company.
Tenders have already been submitted for contracts in locations as diverse as South America and the Far East. This heralds a significant increase in the export capability of UAE for non-commodity petroleum-based products and ensures the continued development of high-technology product manufacture within the region as a whole, says the spokesman.
Coflexlite is a revolutionary pipeline technology designed and specified to provide cost-effective, maintenance and trouble-free operation for a variety of onshore pipeline applications. The Coflexlite range of products is especially intended for those end users conscious of reducing pipeline life-cycle costs and concerned about safe environmentally-sound operation. Whilst the product is suitable for almost all applications, Coflexlite is particularly well-suited for the following uses:

  • Oil and gas production flow lines;
  • Water and gas injection lines;
  • Effluent water lines;
  • Gas transmission lines;
  • Fire water systems; and
  • Re-usable lines.

The Coflexlite reinforced thermoplastic pile is an un-bonded flexible pipe consisting of three functional layers, namely:

  • High-density polyethylene inner liner – fluid seal and resistance;
  • Aramid fibre (Kevlar) reinforcement – pressure and corrosion resistance;
  • High-density polyethylene sheath – white ultraviolet (UV)-resistant outer layer.

By virtue of the fact that the product is unbonded, any potential problems associated with gas diffusion and permeation are eliminated entirely.
