Burj Dubai enters second phase

01 October 2004

Work on the iconic Burj Dubai has reached a new milestone following the pouring of concrete for the foundation slab of the tower, which is expected to be tallest in the world.

This ends the first phase of the construction and marks the beginning of the next defining stage that will see the structure begin to rise over the Dubai skyline. Tenders for the construction of the tower are currently under evaluation.
“With its scale and magnitude, the Burj Dubai is set to change the face of the city forever. For Emaar, it represents the next stage of growth for the company and will be the base for our developments that will follow,” said Emaar chairman, Mohamed Ali Alabbar.
“The Burj Dubai is certain to become a new global architectural landmark. It not only represents the unique spirit of Dubai, but is a global beacon to those who believe that success lies in daring to dream and bringing that dream to fruition.”
Its unique mix of functional modernist surfaces and more decorative form contains abstract references to regional and cultural influences. Located within a 500-acre development surrounded by lakes and landscaped gardens, flanked by the Dubai Mall, the world’s largest shopping and entertainment complex; The Boulevard, a 3.5 km parade bordered by buildings that draw on a range of styles from around the world; The Residences’ exclusive up-market apartments; and the stylish antiquity of The Old Town.
Chicago-based Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) is the architects and Turner International, the project and construction managers.
Emaar has also announced the launch of The Old Town, the traditionally designed community that successfully articulates inspirational Arabic culture within the most influential address on earth.
The Old Town in the Burj Dubai District is a pedestrianised lifestyle development with spectacular views of Burj Dubai and the Dubai Mall, and in close quarters to the colour and vibrancy of Dubai's downtown area.
Construction has already begun and the first apartments will be ready for handover by the end of 2006.
The units comprise one-room to four-room apartments and penthouses ranging from 725 sq ft to 3,150 sq ft.
