New Holland fleet on the fast track

01 April 2008

A fleet of New Holland equipment has been working at a feverish pace on the Sheikh Khalifa Highway near Hamad Town on a fast-track roadworks contract.

The construction of the carriageways and underpasses is being undertaken by the construction division of Ahmad Mansoor Al A’ali (AMA).
“We have been using New Holland Kobelco machines for a couple of years and have been very satisfied by their performance,” says John Doherty construction manager at AMA. “They are good value for money. We had about 450,000 cu m of material out there, all of which had to be broken by breakers. None of it could be excavated as-is with standard excavators.”
“This was one of the major challenges onsite,” says Doherty. “At one stage, we had almost 37 excavators here, all fitted with breakers on them. We are now out of the heavy earth moving operations and are now into building walls and getting the drainage done.”
He adds: “Work started onsite on July 20 last year and it took us till the end of November to just complete the earthworks, which shows how hard the surface was. It is a kind of a gabbro, but harder than the sandstone that is found in Dubai. Over 25 New Holland excavators along with a couple of backhoes and wheel loaders have been used on the jobsite.
Each underpass is approximately 1.5 km long with three carriages in each direction, and once complete will seek to ease congestion on the busy highway.
