Numbers rise at quarry show
steinexpo 2008, the seventh stone quarry demonstration exhibition that took place last month in Niederofleiden, Germany, was hailed as a success by both exhibitors and visitors, according to Geoplan, the event’s organiser.
Held at the Niederofleiden stone quarry over a total surface area of approximately 200 000 sq m, the show attracted close to 250 exhibitors, who were delighted by the quality of trade visitors, who in turn praised the the event’s comprehensive portfolio, according to the organiser.
The number of exhibitors and brands rose about 16 per cent over the 2005 edition, while the number of visitors rose by about 35 per cent to hit a total of 43,280, a well-deserved result, Geoplan said.
The next edition will be held from August 31 to September 3, 2011.
Geosynthetics in the spotlight
Germany’s SKZ, a plastics research, training, testing and certification organisation, is to host a seminar on geosynthetics in Dubai this month.
Titled ‘The Lifetime of Geosynthetics’, the seminar will be held in association with Dubai’s BMC Gulf Trading and Contracting on October 22 and 23 at the Radisson SAS hotel.
“Commercial geosynthetics have proved durable over the 50 years since they were first installed, and over that period the quality of the products available has been improved,” explains SKZ’s Helmut Zanzinger, who will chair the event.
An understanding of the physics and chemistry of degradation has led to tests that can be performed within a reasonable time to provide an assurance that a conventional geosynthetic will last for at least 25 years in a ‘normal’ soil environment. A more formal and comprehensive life assessment is required for a geosynthetic to be used outside these limits: for new or different polymers, higher temperatures, more aggressive environments and above all for longer lifetimes. The conference is intended to set out how to perform such an assessment.
The second day will conclude with a technical tour to the artificial lakes construction site in Dubai.
