Schon to fast-track work on Dubai Lagoon

01 June 2010

SCHON Properties has awarded a Dh82.25-million ($22 million) construction contract to Commodore Contracting, in a bid to speed up construction within Zones Two and Four of the Dh3-billion ($1.12 billion) Dubai Lagoon, a fully-integrated residential community. The developer has also seen the completion at the development of a dedicated substation – in which it invested Dh48 million ($13 million) – at the project.

This agreement, involving all concrete and blockworks, a double basement, superstructure, waterproofing and related works for both zones with a combined built-up area of 1.4 million sq ft, will pave the way for more streamlined development of the site.
Commodore Contracting joins the project’s existing contractors, Bin Sabt Building Contracting Company, which is close to completing the structural work on Zone One, and Belhasa Contracting and Engineering Company (BHECC), which is on site with an intensified construction programme planned for Zone Three.
With building permits already issued and mobilisation of cranes started for Zone Two, actual construction is expected to start this month and the ground floor will be hit by mid-September, according to the contractor’s schedule. Commodore Contracting was scheduled to commence concrete pouring in Zone Two late last month, with work on Zone Four to commence this month.
Meanwhile, work on the substation has been completed and the project is ready to be commissioned. Built to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply for the massive community project, the substation is part of the developer’s commitment towards the prompt completion of all infrastructure, leading up to the scheduled handover of the project, with Zone One slated for the end of this year.
The 132/11 kVA substation has been built to deliver 108 MW – exceeding the anticipated demand of 65 to 70 MW for the project.
