Oman airport will be operational in 2014

01 November 2011

WORK on the state-of-the-art Muscat International Airport in Oman is moving at a fast pace and the new facility is expected to become operational by October 2014, according to the Times of Oman.

“The construction work, to be completed by April 2014, will be followed by about six months of soft operations of the transitional phase to relocate from the old building to the new one,” said Dr Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Futaisi, Oman’s Minister of Transport and Communications, during a tour of the site.

“The peak of the core works and the complete synchronisation of all construction works are expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2012,” Al Futaisi said.

Other major works include the construction of a new 4-km long runway, associated taxiways and aprons to facilitate aircraft movements. The new apron will accommodate 58 aircraft stands, a spokesperson for the project said.

Cowi, in a joint venture with Larsen Architects and Copenhagen Airports, is the principal consultant on the expansion of the airport, which will have 12 new buildings, including the air traffic control tower, which when completed will be the tallest structure in Oman standing at 100 m.
