01 November 2011

THE foundations have been laid for the first phase of the QR25.6-billion ($7 billion) world-scale deepwater New Doha Port in Mesaieed, Qatar, which will be completed in 2016.

The port will be completed in three phases with the second phase to be launched in 2020 and the third in 2030. On completion of the third phase, the New Doha Port will have a cargo-handling capacity of 6 million TEUs. The project is being built over an area of about 26.5 sq km.

The port will be equipped to handle the world’s largest ships and be among the largest deepwater ports in the world.

The project will be a key driver of the national economy contributing significantly to the GDP and will provide further impetus to Qatar’s development, especially with the economic zones being set up, and growth of the Mesaieed Industrial City as a whole.

Congestion in Doha due to port activities is expected to be eased with the new Mesaieed port becoming operational.

Project manager Nabil Al Buainain said there were plans to provide a rail link between the port and New Doha International Airport.
