ABOUT 70 per cent of construction works in Rashid Hospital tunnels project in Dubai has been completed, according to Mattar Al Tayer, chairman of the board and executive director of Dubai’s Roads & Transport Authority (RTA).
He said he expected all works costing about Dh700 million ($190.7 million) to be completed to allow its opening in mid-2013.
“The construction of Rashid Hospital tunnels project is part of a masterplan aimed to ease the traffic congestion in the vicinity of Rashid Hospital and ensure a smooth traffic flow in the area,” Al Tayer said.
Upon completion, the project will boost the capacity of the roads within the area to about 6,000 vehicles per hour.
According to Al Tayer, the contractor has completed all infrastructure and utility works including those related to Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa), sewerage services and Etisalat, as well as construction works in the vehicles and pedestrians tunnel.
About 60 per cent of the rainwater drainage network works and more than 90 per cent in electromechanical tunnel works has been complete while work on the streetlighting, signals and lighting works is half way through.
By July this year, the RTA expects to open the at-grade roads linking Al Riyadh Street and Oud Metha which serve Rashid Hospital and Dubai Media, which is expected to ease traffic flow and congestion in the area. The project comprises construction of roads and two two-lane tunnels serving the traffic inbound from Tariq bin Ziyad and Umm Harir streets and heading towards the intersection of Al Riyadh Street with the extension of the Floating Bridge. The two tunnels merge to form a four-lane street heading towards Al Riyadh Street via Rashid Hospital.
Meanwhile, the RTA has undertaken several projects in Bur Dubai to enhance roads capacity including the six-lane Floating Bridge. It has also widened Al Maktoum Bridge from nine to 11 lanes.
