Consortium starts work on Jebel Ali L power plant

01 June 2003

A consortium of Japan's Mitsubishi Corporation and Toshiba has begun work on the phase 1 of the Jebel Ali L power station project. The plant will have a capacity of 650 MW and 70 million gallons per day of water.

The client, Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) has awarded four engineering, procurement and construction contracts. The consultant is Germany's Laymeyer International.

Mitsubishi's contract to build the power island calls for the supply and installation of gas turbines, heat recovery steam generators, auxiliary boilers, back pressure steam turbines and carrying out associated works.

France's Alstom has won a contract to build the 400 kV substation.

A contract to install 400 kV overhead lines and link it to the Dewa network has been awarded to the local Emirates Trading Agency.

Earlier last month, Dewa picked Italian firm Fisia Italiampianti for an estimated $290 million contract to build the desalination plant adjacent to the power station. The package includes EPC work on a seawater intake/outfall, multistage flash, desalination units, a blending plant, a potable water reservoir and potable water export lines.

The entire project, which is estimated at Dh3 billion ($817.4 million), is scheduled to be completed in the first half of 2005.
