WS Atkins has been appointed by Dubai Municipality as the lead consultant for the Dh610 million ($166 million) new Dubai Zoo project.
The 560-hectare zoo will be adjacent to the Al Mushrif National Park. A veterinary care centre for zoo and privately-owned animals will also be provided.
The project will consist of an open zoo, which involves six major habitats such as Sub-Saharan Africa, Arabian Desert, Wadi (desert valley), Arabian coastal Desert, Asian Temperate Forest and Himalayan Hillside.
In addition, it will include a Wildlife Safari, a Bedouin Tented Camp (Camel Safari), Night Safari, Biodiversity Museum, Captive Breeding and Conservation Centre and Birds of Prey Show.
Construction will start at the end of this year and the zoo is scheduled to open in 2007.
