Nakheel Corporation recently unveiled concept plans to construct another offshore island development just off the coast of Dubai called 'The World', a series of 200 islands positioned to form the shape of the world map.
The 60 million sq ft development will be 5 km off the coast of Dubai and will be 5.5 km long and wide. It will also have 10 million sq ft of beach, said Nakheel executive chairman Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem.
The islands will vary in size and will be themed to show some similarities to the specific country they represent. A series of waterways, canals and lakes has also been integrated into the overall design. Access to the islands will be by marine transport only. To protect the development, two types of breakwater will be built to surround it: an above water revetment and a submerged reef.
Reclamation is expected to start in late 2003 and total completion is forecast for 2008.
