Ras Al Khor road network split into six contracts

01 September 2005

Dubai Municipality has divided the Ras Al Khor road network projects into six contracts that carry a total estimated cost of Dh1.85 billion, to expedite work on the projects.

The project involves a fourth crossing over Dubai Creek and a an express highway from the First Interchange on Sheikh Zayed Road, passing through Doha Street and Jeddaf Area and linking the new Ras Al Khor bridge.
The fifth and sixth contracts of the project are expected to be implemented by December 2007. Works under these contracts would begin in March 2006 and would take 21 months to complete.
Mattar Al Tayer, deputy director general of Dubai Municipality, said a special task force has been formed in the Municipality to follow up implementation of the fifth and sixth contracts and to overcome obstacles.
He noted that the improvements on the First Interchange of Sheikh Zayed Road and construction of a two-layer road on Doha Street form part of the fourth crossing project. The project involves construction of a two-layer road network over Doha Street with the top layer serving passing traffic while the bottom layer serving traffic to and from Burj Dubai, DIFC and Dubai Business Bay. It will also involve replacement of the first interchange of Sheikh Zayed Road with a new one ensuring free flow to all directions in addition to constructing an underground tunnel in Doha Street towards DIFC.
Work on the Dh388 million first phase of the Ras Al Khor corridor project began in February this year. Phase One includes construction of the 10-lane and non-open span Ras Al Khor Bridge, and the digging of a tunnel on the intersection of Al Rabat Road and Marrakesh Road.
The bridge will have five lanes in each direction, with the option of a sixth. The structure will be 15 m above the high-water mark, allowing ship movement in the creek without the need for a lifting span.
The expansion of Rabat Road to six lanes in either direction – three of which will be dedicated to the expressway while the remaining three would be meant for internal traffic, construction of an intersection at Al Rabat Road and Nad Al Hamr Road, expansion of the Nad Al Hamr Road to a five-lane highway towards the North and four-lane highway towards the South – all the way to the Dubai International Airport Tunnel and the construction of access road for the Dubai Festival City on the Al Rabat Road, constitute the second phase of the corridor project.
