Dutco Balfour Beatty wins Dubai Creek deal

01 September 2005

Dutco Balfour Beatty Construction Group has been awarded the Dh200 million ($54.5 million) contract for the phase one extension of Dubai’s creek.

Dubai Properties, developer of Business Bay through which the new creek extension will run, said phase one consists of a six-km stretch between Doha Road and Shaikh Zayed Road, ending before the second interchange.
Work has already commenced on dredging the channel that is scheduled for completion within 16 months, said Dubai Properties.
Phase one extension will not be linked to either the creek or the Arabian Gulf, as indicated in the master plan charts. It will run through an unoccupied desert stretch and will not disrupt traffic or current roads.
The link-ups are expected to take place in the second and third phases of the project. The new creek will be the centre point of the Business Bay and will replicate the success that Dubai witnessed with the old creek.
The project promises to be the new trade gateway. The six-km Dubai Creek extension will require the removal of more than six million cu m of earth. It will have an average width of 130 m and will be 5.5 to 6 m deep, and will be able to accommodate pleasure yachts of up to 60 m in size.
Business Bay will extend from Ras Al Khor to Sheikh Zayed Road. Covering an area of 64 million sq ft, the new initiative will provide a conducive environment and infrastructure for businesses from around the world to establish their local, regional and international headquarters.
The business cluster will extend several kilometers along an extended Dubai Creek starting from the Ras Al Khor area to the point on Sheikh Zayed Road where the previous Central Military Command existed. This whole area will turn into an active commercial and business district that will encourage leading firms to house their local, regional and international headquarters there.
