Qatar’s plans to set up one of the largest aluminium plants in the world got a step closer to reality last month with the laying of the foundation stone for the multibillion-dollar QP-Hydro joint venture at Mesaieed.
Qatalum, with a first phase capacity of 585,000 tonnes of primary aluminium, is expected to commence operations in the last quarter of 2009 and is expected to reach full capacity in 2010.
According to Qatar Petroleum (QP), construction work on the project, set to come up on a 1.5 sq km plot, will start off soon.
Qatar Petroleum and Hydro have a 50:50 stake in the joint venture.
Qatalum will be built using the world’s most sophisticated technology designed to minimise environmental damage.
The project will also feature a dedicated 1,350 MW power plant that will ensure stable power supply.
Apart from this, the project will also necessitate the construction of a container berth at Mesaieed Industrial City (MIC), adjacent to Qatalum’s berth 8 to handle the export of final products.
The project is said to have received the necessary Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) from the Supreme Council for the Environment and Natural Reserves last year.
