Carillion Alawi wins Oman expo centre deal

01 July 2013

CARILLION Alawi has won a contract to construct the exhibition halls, the car-park and the energy centre at the Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre (OCEC) precinct in the Al Irfan area of Muscat, Oman.

The RO78-million ($202 million) deal is for Package Two of the project being developed by Omran, according to the Oman Observer.

The scope of work includes exhibition halls featuring 22,000 sq m of column-free exhibition space. Halls One and Two will have a superior fit-out, specialised acoustic treatment, advanced lighting and rigging requirements to act as a multi-purpose space for plenary sessions, concerts, performances, and gala events on a larger scale of up to 10,000 seated in theatre-style. The contract also includes the construction of a three-storey car-park for 4,200 vehicles with a built-up area of 143,000 sq m.

The contract also entails the construction of a concourse with a glazed curtain-wall system, fully equipped with a main production kitchen and three cafes, hospitality suites, administration/office areas, a central landscaped courtyard and two circulation nodes connecting the concourse to the car-park.

Additionally, the scope will also cover the ancillary buildings, namely the energy centre which serves as the district cooling plant for the entire precinct, security screening facility, taxi amenity building, waste management building, a landscape maintenance building and electrical substation facility.

The OCEC is being built in two phases, with the exhibition halls due for completion in 2015. The complex will also feature two tiered auditoria to seat 3,200 and 450 people, 14 meeting rooms for 70 to 360 delegates, two well-appointed ballrooms to seat up to 2,360, a VIP pavilion and a spacious food-court.

The project also features a number of sustainable initiatives in conservation of energy, potable water and use of treated sewage effluent for cooling and irrigation and thus targets Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (Leed) certification from the United States Green Building Council.

Omran is in the process of releasing a series of other construction packages by the end of the year that include the convention centre buildings, a five-star hotel, a four-star hotel, and a number of class-A office buildings, which are due for completion in late 2016.
