01 July 2013

DRAKE & Scull International (DSI), in joint venture with Habtoor Leighton Specon, will provide turnkey MEP (mechanical, electrical and plumbing) solutions under a SR522-million ($139 million) deal for a medical city project in Saudi Arabia. The hospital is believed to be the first of its kind in the region to include a proton therapy centre.

The joint venture will provide MEP works for the National Institute of Neurosciences, and the cancer and cardiac centres in King Fahad Medical City, Riyadh. DSI’s share of the contract will be SR261 million ($69 million) or 50 per cent.

Spanning a total built-up area of 234,000 sq m, the project includes the 11-level National Institute of Neurosciences, 11-level Comprehensive Cancer Centre, three-level Cardiac Centre, seven-level laboratories and office building, radiology centre, cardiology centre, underground car parks, four-level central services building and a 320-m long services tunnel.

The facilities are part of the SR2.3-billion King Fahad Medical City, the largest and most advanced medical complex in the Middle East with a total capacity of 1,095 beds.

The new medical facility is part of DSI’s growing portfolio of healthcare projects in Saudi Arabia, which also includes a new facility in Dammam as well as the Tabarjal Hospital, Mina Hospital and Health College.

DSI’s CEO Khaldoun Tabari said: “The award is a major milestone in our extensive healthcare experience in the kingdom. Our knowledge of critical healthcare systems make us well suited to undertake projects of similar scale and engineering complexities.”
