01 August 2002

The construction sector in Qatar is enjoying a boom with a host of new projects on the cards, the Gulf Times said.

Several international firms are bidding for infrastructure and tourism projects.

The government has allocated QR4.391 billion ($1.206 billion) for major public projects under its 2002/03 budget, 39 per cent more than the previous allocation, the report said. Of this amount, QR646 million and QR450 million will be spent on roads and drainage projects respectively. The number of building permits issued last year was 4,002, compared with 3,368 in 2000.

The major roads under construction include Salwa Road, North Road and Dukhan road. Some roundabouts are being transformed into signallised junctions.

New hospitals in Al-Khor and another in Mesaieed will ease the pressure on Hamad Hospital. Around 30 new school buildings will be ready in September and many others are being upgraded.

The private sector is also witnessing a boom with a number of villas, apartment blocks, malls and new hotels such as Four Seasons and Hilton.

The construction firms have been given another shot in the arm by the country's selection to host the 2006 Asian Games. As part of the preparations, existing facilities are being upgraded and new facilities, including stadiums and an Olympic Village, are being planned.

Other projects include the new international airport and a museum of Islamic Arts in Doha.
