Oman water scheme awarded
Muscat: The local Al Matar Trading & Contracting has won a RO16.396 million ($42.5 million) contract for construction work on a major water scheme in Oman. The project forms part of the first phase of a long-term government project to ease the shortage of water in the interior region.
The project will supply water to an estimated 42,000 residents of towns and villages in Samayil, Bid Bid and Fanja. In later phases, the water scheme will be expanded to include the wilayats of Izki, Nizwa, Bahla, Manah and Al Hamra. In all, the project will benefit 462,000 people over its 25-year time frame.
The client is the Ministry of Housing, Electricity and Water, and the designer Consulting Engineering Services (CES).
As part of its contract, Al Matar will build a 62-km 1,600 mm-diameter pipeline from Seeb to Fanja, Bid Bid and Samayil.
The contractor will build tanker filling points for the benefit of outlying communities.
Al Matar will also construct a ground reservoir of 11.2 million-litre capacity at Al Khoudh. This reservoir will be fed by the Barka desalination plant, which is being developed by AES Barka, a joint venture between the US' AES Corp and the local Multitech. A number of overhead reservoirs will also be constructed along the route of the water supply.
The network is due to begin supplying water in the fourth quarter of next year.
