Plans being finalised for Bahrain Iceberg project

01 June 2003

Plans for the $700 million (BD264.6 million) Bahrain Iceberg project are being finalised and should be completed in months, says Riyada Consulting Company general manager Moataz Al Agha.

The first phase, which will include a themed five-star hotel, snow slope and shopping mall, will then take three years to complete. It will be opened to the public while work continues on the second phase, including a marina, beach and ice hockey rink, which will take a further two years.

The snow slope is expected to be the longest of its kind in the world and will provide a year-round venue for snow sports. The design is inspired by Caspar David Friederich's picture The Iceberg, which dates back to 1824.

Meanwhile, the project has won approval in principle from the Southern Municipality Council and now finds a new location, the Zallaq area. The project was originally intended to be constructed on a man-made island between the Shaikh Isa bin Salman and Shaikh Hamad bin Isa causeways.

Municipality Council member Khalid Al Aathem said that the council had given initial approval for the project because it seemed to have great potential to benefit the people of the area and the country as a whole.

He said the new proposal was to build the project off Al Jazair Beach and the Economic Development Board (EDB) had promised to clean up the beach as part of the deal.

The project is being developed by the Bahraini German Entertainment Projects Company and BCB Bartels Consult. It was initiated by the joint venture partnership between Riyada Consulting Company and Ravinala International Consultants, Germany.
