Work on the Bahrain Racing Circuit (BRC), which will host the first Formula One Grand Prix in the Middle East, continues to progress ahead of schedule and is expected to be completed within the 484-day period.
A deadline of March 7 has been set to finish the BD56.2 million track ($150 million), which is now more than 30 per cent complete. The project has 1,800 men working round the clock to ensure the circuit opens on time, but that figure could increase to more than 2,000 in the coming months, the officials of the BRC state.
The period from September to November is described as a crucial phase in the track's development, because it will require co-ordination between various specialists as the track starts to come together. It is also the time when the asphalting work and the fixing of steel structures to support the Arabic-style membrane roofing, is slated to commence.
The project is on schedule as far as track works are concerned, but slightly ahead of schedule in terms of buildings.
The Tender Board also opened nine tenders to improve access to the Formula One site, with values ranging from BD2.3 million to BD4.1m.
The project, involves the construction of a 3.5-km stretch of road linking Zallaq Highway, near Bahrain University's west gate, to the Formula One site, and is expected to be completed in five months.
The tenders were opened at a meeting chaired by Minister of State and Tender Board chairman Dr Abdulhussain Ali Mirza at the Bahrain International Exhibition Centre. The lowest bidder was Ahmed Mansoor Al A'ali, which quoted BD2,348,904, while the highest tender was quoted by Bahrain Motors at BD4,158,000.
