01 September 2003

The area surrounding an ancient spring in Bahrain's Mahooz area will be turned into a park as part of the country's efforts to preserve its natural and historic sites.

The BD330,000 ($877,658) project on Umm Shuoom spring is waiting for an approval on the budget from the Finance and National Economy Ministry.
Capital Municipal Council chairman Murtaza Bader said after the ministry's approval, tenders will be offered for the project which includes two springs and work is expected to start on the development as early as October.
'The project includes building a mosque in the area, a walkway, car parks and football and basketball grounds,' he said. 'Our renovation plan includes rehabilitating one of the springs to be suitable for people to swim in, while the other will be turned into a sanctuary for birds, fish and frogs.'
The renovated springs will be surrounded by a fence to prevent accidents.
'There are five very famous springs in Bahrain. They are Ayn Adhari, Umm Al Shuoom, Ayn Al Raha in Sitra, Ayn Al Safahiya in Nabih Saleh and Ayn Qassari in Bilad Al Qadeem,' he said.
