Manama Suq redesign will preserve heritage

01 September 2003

ACE Almoayyed (ACEA) has promised to redesign and redevelop the Manama suq in Bahrain without sacrificing the heritage it embodies.

ACEA, which has won the BD198,500 ($526,500) contract for redesigning the project, has deployed a team of architects to collect information from various authorities to make the redesigned suq to reflect its rich heritage.
Once complete, the Manama suq will become one of the major tourist attractions in the kingdom, said Jawad Al Hawaj, chairman of the special committee formed to spearhead the project.
'The project will be executed in different phases,' he said. 'The road stretching from Bab Al Bahrain to Shaikh Abdulla Road will be included in the first phase.''
Traditional coffee shops and souvenir shops will be opened in the area. The design also provides for the development of a small square and a pedestrian area in the central suq.
An ACE Almoayyed spokesman said the conceptual design was submitted during the tender stage. The final designs are expected to be ready by the end of the year, so that work on the actual project can start early next year.
