A consortium led by Japan's Mitsubishi and Toshiba has won the Dh3 billion ($816 million) project to develop the 'L' power and desalination plant in Jebel Ali. Italy's Fisia Italimpianti earlier won the contract for the desalination part of the project, estimated at more than Dh1 billion.
ETA-Ascon and Alstom are also part of the project, which will be completed by 2005. The project will add 860 MW of power and 70 million gallons per day (mgpd) of water to Dubai's current capacity of 4,710 MW of electricity and 260 mgpd of desalinated water.
The Mitsubishi-Toshiba consortium won the contract in the face of competition from major international groups.
'The new capacities, when they come on stream, will be of immense benefit as we have seen a steady increase in demand for both power and water,' said Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, general manager of Dewa.
The L project is divided into four stages, with the first concentrated on the power generation station using gas turbines. The second stage will feature the seawater desalination station, the third will see a 400 kV transformer station, and the final phase will see the setting up of a 400 kV overhead transmission and connection lines to connect the 'L' station to the Dubai electricity grid.
