Shaikh Saoud bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, secretary general of the Qatar National Olympic Committee, signed six major contracts valued at $22 million, at the recent QSi Expo. The contracts form part of a development plan announced earlier by Sheikh Saoud estimated to cost $1.8 billion.
The contracts cover a variety of development, construction and infrastructure projects. All the contracts announced related to three major facilities at Rayyan, Al Ittihad and Al Saad sport complexes.
Contraco has the main contract for the construction of two multi-purpose sports halls at Rayyan and Al Ittihad complexes. Each hall will seat 3,000 people and are intended for a variety of uses such as handball, volleyball, basketball and other large scale indoor sports events. The local Satco International has won the contract for the construction of a sports hall at Al Saad Sports complex.
Other major works include the installation of light fittings from Philips by Darwish Trading worth $440,000.
Tadmur Contracting and Trading is to supply $1 million worth air-conditioning by the Japanese manufacturer, Daikin, and Jamco will supply seating from Italian suppliers, Venelli, worth approximately $2.6 million for the main stadiums. ITT will supply sports equipment worth $500,000 along with two massive electronic video display score boards from Daktronics in the US worth around $1.4 million.
The scope of work at the Rayyan and Al Ittihad clubs is based upon a substantial development of all sports facilities in Qatar ahead of the 2006 Asian Games.
