Bahrain to classify contractors

01 January 2003

A major shake-up of Bahrain's contracting sector is on the cards, with the introduction of a new classification system. It is being drawn up by the Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry and should be implemented in the next two to three years.

Long-term benefits significantly outweigh any short-term problems which may be experienced, said chamber contractors committee chairman Adel Al A'Ali. He said the new system would bring international standards to Bahrain's contractors.

Leading consultancy companies KPMG, Ernst and Young and Jawad Habib and Company are competing for the contract to work on the project. They will take into account the views of government bodies as well as contractors, before making recommendations.

Classification systems operated around the world will be reviewed and the experience of countries such as Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa will be drawn upon.

Classification systems are used to group companies together according to their standing in the market. A company's classification will depend on things such as the size of its workforce, the value of its projects, quality of staff and technological capabilities.

Currently this practice is only carried out by the Works and Housing Ministry for government projects.
