01 January 2003

Saudi Cable Company (SCC) has won a BD7.8 million ($20.69 million) contract to manufacture and commission cables to upgrade Bahrain's electricity network. The contract covers the longest high-tension line awarded worldwide, according to SCC.

The Jeddah-based firm will install nearly 200 km of new cabling to upgrade connections from the Hidd power station and several substations into the main network.

The company will supply 220 kV underground power cables and fibre optic cables for the ministry's 220 kV transmission network. These will be used to connect substations in west Manama, Al Jasra, Hamad Town and Sitra to the network.

The work also involves establishing underground cable links connecting the Hidd power station to Umm Al Hassam and the Diplomatic Area. The total length of power cables is 143 km and the length of the fibre optic cables is 45 km.

The project is part of a comprehensive development programme to reinforce and develop the electricity transmission network and to meet increasing demand. The project will be executed over a three-year period.
