Ministry to issue library tenders

01 January 2003

Qatar's Ministry of Municipal & Agriculture will issue pre-qualification tenders to local and international contractors in the first quarter of this year for the proposed Qatar National Library (QNL) building.

The world-renowned Japanese architect/consultant Arata Isozaki has presented the futuristic design of the estimated $100 million project. The proposed library is designed to become a landmark and will look like a floating spaceship.

The work, scheduled to start in six months, will be carried out in two stages. The first stage is the substructure, which involves site work, piling, stage review and awarding of the project. The second stage is the 0-120 m superstructure, which is in the final design stage.

The proposed building is scheduled to be ready by September 2005. It will be 120 m high, 400 m long and 300 m wide, with a 450 m-corniche frontage. It includes the main library, which will be elevated high above the ground.

Each floor has a canopy or horizontal rib which protects the interior from solar radiation. The roof will be accessible to the public as an observation deck.

The library complex will also include a conference centre and multipurpose hall.

It will contain 1 million items of historical documents, latest information for business and research, multi-media information services based on advanced IT infrastructure, 10,000 maps, manuscripts and rare books, 100,000 CD-Rom titles, 200,000 disks/tapes of music and 100,000 disks/videos that will be available to the public.
