The design of Abu Dhabi International Airport’s (Adia) multi-billion-dirham mega Midfield Terminal Complex will be unveiled next month, following an international competition which involved some of the world’s biggest design specialists.
The Supervision Committee for the Expansion of Abu Dhabi International Airport (Scadia), has received proposals from four major international design consultants for the UAE capital airport’s future main terminal. Earmarked to handle 20 million passengers a year upon completion in 2010, the facility is part of the ambitious Dh21 billion ($5.7 billion) redevelopment of Adia.
Following a pre-qualifying round involving 10 design consultants, Scadia shortlisted Skidmore Owings and Merrill (SOM), Hellmuth, Obata+Kassabaum (HOK), Fentress Bradburn Architects and Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates.
The four US firms have entered into a competition and a jury comprising international architects and aviation experts will select the best design on December 5.
The multi-phase redevelopment will double the existing airport’s land area to 3,400 hectares. A second category III runway will be built 2,000 m north of the current runway. Cargo, maintenance facilities, free trade zones, catering and other commercial developments will be constructed between the two runways.
