Contracts worth more than BD114 million ($302.41 million) have already been awarded for the construction of the Khalifa bin Salman Port and Industrial Area at Hidd, Bahrain.
The project, to be completed by 2005, consists of seven packages, the biggest of which is the BD79.95 million contract for the port dredging, reclamation and marine work.
According to a Works Ministry spokesman, the first package was the reclamation of 247 hectares of land for the industrial area phase one. Work on the BD19.8 million project began in 1998 and was completed the following year.
The industrial area infrastructure contract, valued at BD12.695 million, was awarded last June. The project will be completed by A A Nass Contracting by March 2003, and will include roads, drainage, street lights, electricity and water distribution centres.
The third package is a BD2 million contract, awarded to Olympic Contracting Company last September for industrial area buildings. The project, to be completed in February 2003, will cover the main gate and gate house, medical centre, business centre, fire station and drill tower.
The Khalifa bin Salman Port dredging, reclamation and marine work contract was awarded to US firm Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company.
The spokesman said work would start next month and would be completed in January 2005. It will include the reclamation of 115 hectares for the port and 95 hectares for the industrial area second phase.
Contracts for the remaining three packages will be awarded over the next two years.
The port infrastructure contract will be tendered out in March 2003 for completion in early 2005. It will cover the construction of port pavings, gantry crane rails, roads, pavements, electricity and water distribution centres, and the provision of other services.
Work on the actual port building will start by the end of 2003 and will be completed by early 2005. The contract will also cover the construction of harbour and container terminals, control building, cargo and packing sheds.
The final package is a contract for procurement and erection of the port and marine equipment, during 2004-2005.
