Construction work on Dubai's ambitious public railway transport system project is scheduled to start by 2003, a report said.
Planners foresee two rail lines in the first phase, which will concentrate only on Dubai, it said.
The project will have links to Sharjah and the Northern Emirates, and Abu Dhabi at a later stage.
Of the two rail lines, one will start from Dubai International Airport and run to Al Ittihad Square in front of Dubai Municipality. The lines will cross the Creek and extend to the Defence Roundabout and on to the Shaikh Khalifa bin Zayed Road and the Shaikh Zayed Road.
The main railway station will be near the municipality. Hotels, restaurants, shopping malls, theatres and cinemas will also be built in the area, the report said.
The second line will start from Al Nahda Roundabout in Al Qussais, run to Al Ittihad Square, cross the Creek and go on to the Defence Roundabout.
This is the first phase of construction with other phases to be announced later.
Dubai is also to get a new Dh197 million ($53.63 million) bridge over the Creek - bringing the total to three - as part of a Dh400 million project to relieve traffic congestion.
Work on the scheme is expected to start at the beginning of 2003, and will include a new "corridor" road running all the way from the Dubai World Trade Centre in Bur Dubai, and ending at a point north of Dubai International Airport on the Deira side.
A study on the project, known as the Al Garhoud Bridge Corridor, began in August and will be finished by the end of this year in time for construction to begin early in 2003, a said.
"The Al Garhoud bridge corridor is part of the inter-emirate strategic highway network and is classed as an arterial freeway within that network," said an official.
"Part of the project is building a new bridge at a cost of Dh197 million. The cost of Al Jadaf interchange is Dh42 million, and it will link Al Quta'eyat Road.
"The Airport Road Interchange and junction between Al Garhoud Road and Al Ittihad road will cost Dh45 million. The Al Qiyadah junction will be built at a cost of Dh49 million.
"The Dubai Festival City will be constructed at a cost of Dh66 million as part of this project," he said.
