Amwaj project takes shape

01 January 2002

Work on the $1 billion (BD378 million) Amwaj Islands project in Bahrain will enter a new phase with the construction of housing development units and a hotel in March.

The BD12 million reclamation work covering a total area of 3 million sq m by Dutch firm Boskalis will be completed in June, said Saud Abdulaziz Kanoo, chairman of Ossis Property Developers, which is promoting the project.

"The island has started taking shape, with 300,000 sq m already reclaimed. It is now visible from the Galali shoreline," he said.

"A road to reach the island will be ready during the first quarter of this year. Booking for the plots has already started. The size of the plots range from 450 sq m to 1,500 sq m, with a minimum price estimated at BD38,000."

Kanoo said details of the housing layouts would be ready by next month.

"We are at a very advanced stage of signing an agreement with an international hotel chain, which will manage the first four or five-star hotel to be built on the island," he continued.

It will take another 15 months for completion of the first phase of the project which will include reclamation, development of the infrastructure like water, drainage, telephones and electricity, roads, street lighting and pavements.

The contract for the first phase of the project for "containment of the island and the creation of a 9.5 km beachfront" was awarded to US firm TC Mirafi.
