UAE industry to stabilise at $4bn

01 January 2002

The construction industry in the UAE is expected to stabilise at Dh15 billion ($4.08 billion) annually, a study has revealed.

The Emirates Industrial Bank (EIB) study said that the industry will stabilise after witnessing a steady growth in the last 10 years.

The demand for granite and marble will remain in the wake of the development of large-scale projects such as office and residential towers, industrial parks and shopping malls, which favour these materials.

The study put UAE imports of marble and granite in 1999 worth Dh325.4 million, re-exports at Dh8.1 million and, therefore, net imports (demand) at Dh317.3 million. Imports mostly included uncut blocks, slabs and finished tiles. But blocks accounted for only 12 per cent of imports since cutting into slabs and sizing specific tiles wastes up to 25 per cent of granite and marble.

Italy and India topped the list of UAE's marble and granite suppliers, the study said.
