Sohar terminal is launched

Oman International Container Terminal (OICT) has officially been launched at Sohar, under the first phase of the development.

Minister of Transport and Communications Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdullah bin Isa Al Harthy, accompanied by Hutchison Port Holdings (HPH) group managing director John Meredith unveiled a plaque at a quayside ceremony to mark the historic moment.
A joint-venture between HPH, the government, Steinweg of the Netherlands and several other Omani investors, OICT is one of the four independent international terminal operators in Sohar along with Oiltanking, Odfjell and Steinweig.
OICT began construction work in March 2006 and Phase I of the terminal was ready in September 2006. Major exporters like OPP, LG, Sohar Aluminium, Jazeera Tubes and all other exporters and importers have begun to route their cargo through OICT.
Terminal B, Phase I, has a total quay length of 285 m and a depth alongside of 16.5 m. Phase II is expected to come on stream shortly. Upon completion, the container terminal will have a total quay length of 520 m and total yard area of 28 hectares.
